We are pleased to introduce Kybella injections into our practice!

Kybella injection is a prescription medicine used in adults to improve the appearance of submental fat below and chin (also called a 'double chin') and improve the profile.   A few injections in a physician's office can reduce a double chin and reduce the fatty deposit found under the chin, non-invasively. Kybella is the only FDA-approved injection to decrease fat under the chin to improve your profile.

The ideal candidate for this procedure is a younger patient (under the age of 50) who has a moderate fat deposit directly under the chin, and who does not need skin tightening nor has jowling.   The procedure involves two-to-six applications of Kybella injections.  Each trteatment is separated a month apart.  The number of treatments varies and the dose per treatment is customized by the physician for each individual patient.  However, most patients see improvement in 2-4 treatments.

We recommend all our patients who use Kybella sign up for the Brilliant Distinctions reward program online at: This allows us to credit you points for each treatment.  As you earn points, the company then sends you an INSTANT credit towards an additional treatment, either Kybella or Botox or an injectable filler in the Juvederm family!  Please call us for any questions.

See photos below for an example of the improvement that can be achieved.  Please note that these patients in the photos start out with a small amount of fat directly under their chin.  They do not have full necks, with fat that spreads down the length of neck, nor are they overweight.   Kybella injection cannot correct jowling .  For those patients who do not meet the criteria for Kybella injection, please see our Non-surgical Neck Lift page, as you will need a procedure using subdermal application of laser energy to melt the fat lower down on the neck or on the lower face/jowls.

Q & A

What are the options to get rid  of a double chin?

Kybella injections and SmartLipo liposuction are the best options available to reduce a double chin.  For patients who have a double chin accompanied by jowling, sagging skin or who are overweight, we recommend a Non-surgial Neck Lift, achieved by SmartLipo Liposuction plus laser skin tightening. Please call our office for details on both procedures.

What is Kybella?

Kybella is an injectible made of deoxycholic acid.  Deoxycholic acid naturally occurs in the body, and its function is to metabolize fat cells.  In the physician's office, it is used to break down fat under the chin and reduce a 'double chin.'

How long does the procedure take?

Each Kybella session takes 15-20 minutes. The exact number of injections that you need will be determined by the physician and depends on the amount of fat you have under your chin (i.e., the size of your 'double chin') and your desired profile.

What are the side effects of Kybella injections?

Common side effects include of Kybella include: edema (swelling), hematoma (bruising), pain, numbness, erythema (redness), and induration.  Most side effects are mild-to-moderate in severity, temporary in nature and resolve spontaneously.  The side effects decrease with repeated treatments.

Contraindications to Kybella include dysphagia (difficulty swallowing) and bleeding abnormalities.

How can I decrease the risk of bruising with Kybella injections?

We recommend that you:

1.       Discontinue all blood-thinners including baby aspirin, Ibuprofen, Aleve, Fish oils and (possibly) vitamin supplements.

2.       Eat a pineapple and/or take oral Bromelain the evening before and morning of procedure.

3.       Do not drink wine or any alcoholic beverage within 24 hours of procedure.

4.       Come in early to ice a full 15 minutes before procedure (note:  this is not for pain management, it causes vasoconstriction of blood vessels.  When vessels are smaller, there is less chance of injuring them with a needle and if punctured, they bleed less, resulting in less bruising).

5.       Ice after procedure for a full 10-15 minutes in the office, and then as much as possible over the next 24 hours.

6.       Start oral Arnica before procedure.
