Blue Peel

Dr. Christine Brozowski offers chemical peels for the skin in Berkeley, California, in the San Francisco Bay Area as well as her Ketchum office.  She knows that healthy skin is fresh and vibrant with an even tone and smooth texture. With age, however, the process of cell renewal begins to slow down and dark blotches and sun damage begin to appear. Your skin may become dull and develop fine lines and wrinkles. The Obagi Blue Peel is tailored to reduce wrinkles, photodamage and pigmentation problems. It is a medium-depth peel, which removes layers of aged and damaged skin. The Blue Peel is designed so that Dr. Brozowski can accurately control the depth and process of the peel.

Skin treated with a TCA Blue Peel heals faster than with other procedures of similar intensity. After a Blue Peel, there is light peeling as after a sunburn and skin may exhibit a slight blue tint which fades within 5 days. The Blue Peel is a new product for restoring healthier and more beautiful skin. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Brozowski in her Berkeley office to find out if the Blue Peel is right for you.

Benefits of blue peel

The key to success with a chemical peel is having precise control of the level of penetration of the TCA (Trichloroacetic Acid). Dr. Brozowski chooses the Blue Peel's unique dye-based mechanism, which allows the physician to control the peel depth.

  • TCA is not absorbed through the skin; therefore, there are no internal toxic effects.
  • Treats wrinkles, evens out skin tone, removes superficial blemishes.
  • Can be used on the neck and other parts of the body.
  • Treatment takes only 10-15 minutes.
  • Preferred by both light and darker-skinned people.
  • Healing is quicker than with a phenol peel.

Glycolic Peel

Our office also offers chemical peels with help from our aesthetician in the Berkeley office.  A glycolic peel is a non-invasive technique for restoring blemished, unevenly pigmented or acned skin and removing fine wrinkles using glycolic acid to peel away the skin's top layers. When the old layer has peeled off, it exposes a new layer of undamaged skin, which has a smoother, younger, more even-looking appearance. The Glycolic Peel is a superficial depth peel which uses natural fruit compounds to stimulate cell turnover, resulting in younger looking skin. Glycolic peels dramatically improve the skin quality and tone.

We mix the peel solution fresh the day of your visit. Concentrations can range from 50%-95%*. Working together with you, Dr. Brozowski will determine which concentration is best for your skin type. Best results for controlling acne can be achieved by a series of increasing concentration.

*The average patient receives noticeable results with a 70% glycolic peel.

Benefits

Glycolic acid removes old, damaged cells on the top layer of skin and, as a result, it smoothes and softens the skin, diminishes fine lines, decreases acne outbreaks, evens out skin tone coloration and lightens hyperpigmented areas. Affecting only the most superficial layers, glycolic acid peels brighten dull complexions and leave skin feeling smoother: makeup glides on more easily, your skin looks more refreshed, sun damaged areas are lightened, acne scars are less visible.

The discomfort from the Glycolic peel is very minor yet superior for acne control. The main advantage of this peel over the medium-strength TCA peels and phenol deep peels is the lack of "down-time". Most people return immediately to normal activities. It is the mildest peel.

Q&A

How does it work?

Alpha hydroxy acids (AHA), or "fruit acids", are naturally occurring substances found in common foods, such as sugar cane, sour milk, and citrus fruit. Glycolic acid, a highly concentrated alphahydroxyacid, dislodges or dissolves the cellular "glue" that clumps dead skin cells together. It is the dead cell buildup that contributes to the many skin problems and conditions. Acne and pigmentation spots may be caused by the accumulation of dead skin cells in the pores of the skin. Glycolic chemical peels may remove these cells and open the pores and improve acne, sunspots and blotchiness, resulting in improved color and texture of the skin.

What are the concerns and possible side effects?

Occasionally, patients with very sensitive skin may have mild temporary redness or irritation.

What is the level of discomfort during and after the treatment?

You may experience some discomfort, similar to a transient stinging sensation during the treatment, which resides in minutes. No anesthesia or numbing cream is needed.

How long is the recovery time?

There is no downtime and you can return to normal activities immediately after treatment. After your first treatment your skin will have a fresh pink glow. Improvement continues throughout the treatment program. You will be more susceptible to sunlight immediately after a peel so sunscreen is mandatory and avoidance of the sun for the rest of the day is recommended.

What are the results?

Research suggests a series of five to seven applications of the mild glycolic acid peels will achieve the best results and may actually encourage the production of collagen in the dermis, visibly firming sagging skin. Benefits should last for years, as long as an at-home maintenance program of glycolic acid products is continued.
